Challenges When Looking for Housing
“Some of the biggest challenges for people who are in the shelters and looking for housing is what to do with their vouchers (SEPS, City FEPS, LINCS, Section 8– these vouchers are city or state subsidies given to people with low income). People don’t know where to go, how to use the voucher, as there are no guidelines, no database where to go, and most case manager in the shelter system seem not to know where to refer people, or how to assist them once they obtain a voucher.
Another challenge when looking for housing is insufficient income, because most of realtors are asking the market price which is higher than an average person’s annual income. Someone who is working a minimum wage job cannot afford the market price rents and needs a voucher.”
